IR, or Individual Reading means tolerance measurements are taken at 3-5 locations and all readings must be within the stated +/- tolerance. IR tolerances provide much higher dimensional quality and concentricity than standard average readings of our competitors extruded and DOM tubing. Since our tubing is called out by the ID and Wall dimensions, we have a known, guaranteed tolerance for the ID where our phenolic liners and other internal components must properly fit, all without additional machining.
Standard tolerances for COTS tubing (both DOM and extruded) use the average of all the measurement readings taken (3 to 5) which means some locations may be on the outside of the tolerance on the low side and other readings may be outside of tolerance on the high side while their averages stay within the tolerance. Extruded tubing is even larger toleranced and is the very reason why we discontinued the old school 98mm Loki hardware line. So what does this mean?
This can mean a tube with an out of round ID and an ID that is not concentric to the OD. This can produce an extremely unbalanced tube and can cause severe coning issues in minimum diameter and/or high speed flights. Standard COTS tubing is also called out by OD and Wall which means the ID has no guaranteed tolerance and out of roundness can be even worse. This can be the difference between a motors internal components fitting and working properly every single time, or not. All Loki Research hardware is Hardcoat Anodized in Type 3, Class 2 Blue on all motor cases and bulkheads for superior protection as compared to the Type 2 coatings of most competitors.
